99ers Economics - The Plight of America's Long-Term Unemployed

Millions of Long-Term Unemployed are Struggling

The Wake of the Financial Meltdown - The effects of the financial carnage resulting from the mortgage meltdown have rippled into the mainstream American economy. Unemployment has soared and a new word has entered the American vocabulary -'99er'. The term 99er refers to a long-term unemployed worker who has collected unemployment benefits for the maximum allowable period of 99 weeks. Once 99 weeks of unemployment benefits have been paid out, the worker is no longer eligible to collect anymore support. How many workers fall into the category of 99ers? Estimates range from 1.3 to 4.0 million people in the U.S. who have been unemployed for 99 weeks or more.

Even low paying jobs are drying up - What's most troubling about this new trend is that many workers are struggling to find even a low-paying job just to bring in survival money. Many employers are resistant to hiring someone that is "over-qualified" fearing that they may leave as soon as a better paying job comes along. In this economic downturn, however, jobs are scarce, with as many as 5 or 6 workers available for each job.

All Classes of Workers Hit - Workers of all socio-economic backgrounds and job fields are being affected by this economic downturn. The recession is supposedly over, according to the official GDP numbers, but try telling that to someone who has been unemployed for 2 years or more! To them, this isn't a recession, it's an economic depression reminiscent of the Great Depression of the 1930s. The only reason you aren't seeing more people in soup and bread lines is because they are getting aid from the Food Stamps program whose recipients now total more than 40 MILLION. That's right, OVER 40 MILLION PEOPLE IN THE U.S. ARE NOW RECEIVING FOOD STAMPS!

The Social Impacts of Long-Term Unemployment - Suicides and domestic violence may also be rising due to the social pressures resulting from long term unemployment. This is an American tragedy unfolding. A recent news story on PBS News Hour (shown below) on the travails of the 99ers is as frightening as it is heart-breaking showing the personal impacts of the phenomenon on daily lives. Remember, this could be anybody, it could be you, me, and our relatives and friends that are affected by this economic downturn. Job security doesn't exist anymore. PEOPLE NEED TO START LISTENING TO THESE PEOPLE AND START PAYING ATTENTION! Job loss puts a tremendous emotional stress and loss of self-esteem on a person which may lead to increased rates of social unrest. Job loss affects society as a whole, either directly or indirectly and therefore we must call for action on this problem! As Gerald Celente says "When people lose everything and they have nothing left to lose, they lose it!". Let's hope this trend reverses!

99ers Protest on Wall St. - Increasing social unrest may result from the growing ranks of the long-term unemployed. A rally held by 99ers was held on Aug. 12, 2010 right across the from stock exchange. There were about 100 people in the first of what will most likely be many protests on Wall St. As the long-term unemployed become more desperate and numerous, these protests will almost certainly grow much larger.

See the videos below from PBS News Hour, Russia Times and ABC News for more information about the plight of the long-term unemployed.

Are you or someone you know part of the 99ers of America? What are the unemployment trends in your state? Please feel free to share your story in the 'Comments' section at the very end of this article.

Hello AZ, I would never have imagined that first, I would get laid off and that second, I couldn't rally and turn it around to my advantage (better paying job, fewer hours, shorter commute), but that is not what is happening.

My severance runs out very shortly and though my unemployment won't run out for some time, it pays 1/3 of what I was bringing home. By the time it runs out, I won't have a car, a home, I will have defaulted on most if not all debt, and I will be asking the guys on the corner of Belmont and Kimball to give back some of the cash I have been handing out for these past two years.

Frightening isn't the word for it... terrifying doesn't cut it... I will be a 59 year old woman living in a box under highway 90/94... better start packing up the shopping cart!

What word would you use to describe it?

It can happen to anyone... I'm anyone!

Hi KKalmes, I'm sorry to hear about your situation! It's crazy out there and there are no words to describe it! Some words that come to mind are unprecedented and catastrophic. This is affecting everyone from all different backgrounds. I do hope things improve for you and that you can get work! Thanks for sharing your story and remember this: YOU ARE NOT ALONE!

Hello AZ, I hear the Beckmeister says 99ers aren't American. I'd be interested in learning how many of his audience are 99ers and what they think about being called un-American by a man who can cry at the drop of hat.

I think the 99ers should sue the Republican party of NO and should make sure that we don't vote for them. The Constitution gives us the right of pursuit of happiness well how can you be happy if you are homeless? Unemployment is insurance not a gift we whom have worked most of our lives and paid into it with no choice should not be taken off when they decide! When I obtain another job can I opt out of UI payments and save my money myself? No. But I would have had more than they sent me if I would have been putting the same amount of money into a retirement fund or high yield CD.

SUE THEM and GET YOUR MONEY!!!

Off the subject a little but you all should know... The "GR" "CASH AID" program within the Dept. of Social Services in LA county is such: I found out last week that the "CASH AID" that is offered is a "CASH LOAN"! I wonder if people really understand this when "signing" their lives away with all the confusing paperwork... You will have to pay back every penny at the point you start collecting SSI in your golden years. I'm assuming it will then fall on your children's back should you not be able to pay.. I finally was approved for food stamps for the first time in over 2 years, because now I have lost my Unemployment Insurance Benefits. Oh, and last year on the way back from a food stamp DENIAL appeal hearing I lost my only means of transportation, my car. I was in a horrible freeway accident on an LA freeway. The "appeal" was held at the Wilshire District in LA. The judge who presided in my case wasn't even there. He couldn't even bring himself to the appeal hearing. I had to speak to him via conference phone call. All the supporting paperwork I brought to the hearing that supported that I still was in need of food was not even considered. He told me that since I was about 120.00 over the amount to qualify for food stamps, there was nothing he could do. He told me to contact my legislators to try and get the law changed. I was asking for food assistance, because I was hungry and this is what he told me. Shameful.

Hello AZ Guy, you've been calling this thing correctly for the past two years, congratulations and thank you. I'm now at an impass where I'm wondering when inflation will come. I just don't see it right now, but I'd rather not get caught sitting on a pile of cash, debt-free when it happens. My evil plan is to go into hock up to my eyeballs buying real estate and gold, at the exact moment hyper-inflation makes the dollar worthless. Any advice?

Hi Jed,

Thanks for your kind words. I wish I could give you advice, but I'm certainly no financial expert. The only reason I appear to have called it right is because I've taken financial news in from a variety of sources, such as Peter Schiff, AllAmericanGold.com and am merely conveying what they've been saying all along. Just remember, ANY asset including gold and real estate can crash. Also, if everyone flees the dollar and goes to gold, the government can pass laws to make gold less desirable, for example, they can add taxes and fees on any gold transaction etc. etc. I don't know who will be right on inflation.....the Fed announced that they're going to buy $600 Billion in U.S. treasurys to inject more cash into the economy which many see as leading to inflation (devaluation of the dollar). I think a balance of some cash with some gold and silver is a good thing but I wouldn't accrue any debt if you don't have to. Avoid debt if at all possible. Again, I wish I could give advice but I'm not expert. You should take a look at other information sources such as Nightly Business Report (www.pbs.org/nbr) which has free nightly video, Peter Schiff, Gerald Celente, AllAmericanGold.com, calculatedriskblog.com, Mitch Shedlock, CNBC.com, Bloomberg.com etc. etc. That way, you can take in information from alot of different sources and make the best decision for your situation. No one knows for sure what the future will bring but get your news from many different sources so you can formulate your own plan. I would AVOID DEBT though and don't put all your eggs in one basket as the saying goes.

To AZ: Great and insightful hub. Many people refuse to realize and/or just do not care about the plight of the unemployed. They laugh, thinking that this subject is beyond their purview. Many people are further nonplussed when many unemployed people are depressed and want to commit suicide because their situation is no longer bearable. They think that there is something wrong with the person but those dolts do not fully comprehend this ominous socioeconomic climate. They believe that they are ABOVE it but if it happens to them, they will realize how precarious this country's economic climate is. As one former superior said to me, "All of us are paychecks AWAY from homelessness!"
